I miss her!

Special Persons Montage: For this assignment you are to decide on who is special to you. It could be a relative, sibling, parent, friend, mentor, celebrity, or anyone. Then you are to make a video of images or video clips of them showing all the different things that they do that makes them special to you. Add music, animation, transition, anything to make the video. In your write-up be sure to explain why the person is special to you. (5 stars).

For this assignment, I created a video on me! I will be the special person, since Edna is missing me in the final project.

I thought this would be funny and cute to show her side and what misses about me.

I started to use iMovie, my always go to choice for movies, but of course, it started malfunctioning and wouldn’t let me make one.

Screen Shot 2015-12-11 at 3.33.43 PM

So, I decided to use My Stupeflix  which is an online video creator.

For the song, I used “Better Together” by Jack Johnson. I thought this was a cute song because we are better together, and Edna is really missing me!!

I added all the pictures I wanted in the video.

Here is the final video:

We Found Her!

Bring Your Pet To School: Do you miss your pet while you are in school? Do you ever wish that you could bring your pet to school with you? This tutorial assignment will allow your dream to come true. You can use GIMP or other photo edit software to place your pet anywhere on your campus. This assignment can use any photo editing software that you wish to use. (4 stars).

This is another assignment for “Edna’s Not Missing”!

I decided to create an image with Edna here, because this is where she finds me!

I got a picture of Edna, and cropped it. I then took a picture of the bridge towers and used this one for the background.

I used the Preview Application which makes it easy to crop and then paste on to another photo you have.

Here is the original picture.

FullSizeRender 2

Here is the picture of Edna that I cropped. On the application, I  clicked on the left hand square button. From here, I clicked “Lasso tool” which lets you crop wherever the mouse goes!

Screen Shot 2015-12-09 at 10.01.00 PM

As you can see, this is my very cute picture of Edna!! I wanted a cute face for the assignment. I apologize for my cropping skills, my hands are always shaky when it comes to these things!!

I used Control (C) and Control (V) to copy and paste the Edna picture onto the UMW picture. Here is the final product!

Hope you can see Edna peering over the tower’s fence!

Edna’s Not Missing

Edna, a black puppy, enjoys long walks and snuggling on beds. She’s just like any dog!! She also loves to be pet by her owner Miranda. Miranda is her best friend. However, recently, Miranda has been super busy studying for her finals, leaving Edna sad! This morning, Edna Rose woke up and did her everyday, normal routine. She went outside to the bathroom, ate a little food, had a cup of water, then relaxed. She realized something was missing…was her pink chew toy upstairs? Where was her favorite plaid collar? Edna then realized she didn’t know where Miranda was! She ran around the house aimlessly, trying to figure out where she could be. She barked her name multiple times and couldn’t find her. She was so worried about her!

Her first puppy instinct was to call the puppy police. She got on the phone frantically, to tell them about her missing owner Miranda.

Edna was motivated to find her. Her next move was to check all of Miranda’s favorite places. So she had to take a little road-trip. Her first destination is the beach! She had to get a car in order to find Miranda! She was in Florida and got a car and drove down the Eastern coast of Florida.

Screen Shot 2015-12-09 at 4.27.59 PM

She looks around everywhere, all the way from St. Augustine to Fort Lauderdale. She could not find her! She checked the nearest ice-cream places along the beaches too, since Miranda loves ice-cream. (Edna does too!) Miranda is no where to be found. She then decides to make posters! This would help others look for Miranda, too. She made a “Missing Person” poster and started hanging them up on posts, and in stores.

Screen Shot 2015-12-09 at 3.22.02 PM

She searched and searched and almost gave up. She was so upset, she made a video for Miranda. She wanted to remember all the good times she spent playing catch and walking around the park.

She began talking to another puppy named Nina who told her to think back to the last time she saw Miranda. So, Edna thought back. Hmm…

“I’m studying for finals, Edna, I can’t play right now!”

It finally dawned on Edna!! Miranda was at school, studying for hours and taking her exams! She could not believe it, she finally figured it out!

She could not wait to see her! So she went up to UMW, and finally finally found Miranda!! She was so excited to see her that she took a picture on the tower!!!

Afterwards, Miranda and Edna enjoyed a night of ice-cream (puppy ice-cream, of course) and snuggling!

Sunshine State

Design a License Plate: Design your own license plate! You can use an online site, alter a preexisting photo, or make your own from scratch. Make the license plate describe either your or a character. Your license plate design should have two part to it: designing the background for the plate and designing the font. Be creative with it. (3.5 stars).

This is a design assignment for my narrative story.

I decided to create a license plate since Edna was driving all over to find exactly where I might be. I chose Florida because I love the beach, and may have gone there..

I used Zazzle.com to help me customize my own license plate!

It was simple. First, I chose the state and began to edit.

Screen Shot 2015-12-09 at 4.26.48 PM

I clicked, “Edit Text” and then wrote something I thought Edna would have!

Here is Edna’s final license plate.

If Found, Please Call..

Missing Person: Create a missing posters flyer for a fictional movie/show character, made-up person, animal, or a real person. Be sure to include a picture, the name, characteristics, and last seen date and place. Let your imagination do the talking for this poster! (4 stars).

I made this design assignment for my final narrative!

I wanted Edna to create a missing persons poster, just like humans do when they post “Lost Dog” posters!

I used Microsoft Word for this assignment. I decided to use a handy template called Lost or Found Flyer. This was for a dog obviously, but I changed it for the project.

Screen Shot 2015-12-09 at 3.08.28 PM

Having said that, I didn’t have to change much! I inserted a picture of myself, and changed the text a little. For characteristics, I ended up writing “Black eyes” & “White hair”, since dogs can only see in black and white. I thought this was a funny element for my project. I tried to be in the mind of a dog, just like Edna would! This may have been the trickiest part.

Here is the finished Missing Person Flyer!

Puppy Police

Please Someone Call the Police! : You know how in crime movies and criminal investigation shows they usually include an audio of a victom talking to the police over the phone? Well in this assignment make an audio of you talking to the police over the phone. Your story of why you are calling the police is up to you, but make sure the audio has two different voices using Audacity or some other audio editing software. (4 stars).

This assignment is apart of my final narrative of “Edna’s Not Missing”. I used the assignment because I wanted to call into the police that Miranda (Me) was missing. Usually, people don’t call the police when their dogs or cats run away from home or are missing, but I wanted to do this for exaggeration for my story to show how worried Edna was.

I used Audacity for this audio assignment, and throughout the semester, it has been such a great application for recording and editing sounds and effects.

First, I decided to record both parts first. I did the “Police” voice first. Then I recorded Edna’s voice. This was funny because I tried to make them sound a little different.

Screen Shot 2015-12-09 at 4.05.28 PM

I also had to move the recordings over to the correct places so it became a conversation! I used the button in the middle (on the bottom) which has arrows on both sides to drag my recordings to the right place.

Screen Shot 2015-12-09 at 3.45.30 PM

I decided to change the pitch of the “Police’s” part. I went to Effect, then Change Pitch. I decided to drag the bar at the bottom which is “Percent Change” to -10. This made the voice deeper so it would sound different from Edna’s.

Screen Shot 2015-12-09 at 3.45.50 PM

That was basically it. I exported my audio using File, Export Media.

Here is the finished police call!

Here Comes the Bride

Wedding Invitation: We are currently in the middle of the wedding season. With this being said so many people out there are tying the knot! For this assignment, I would like you to create/design your own wedding invitation as if you were going to be getting married soon! What would it look like? You could include pictures, date, time, place, or anything else related to this topic that you think would be fun to incorporate! Use your imagination! Be creative! To create this assignment you should use Canva. Upload your invitation to Flickr and tag it DesignAssignments. (2.5 stars).

This is a tutorial on how to create a wedding invitation using Canva.com.

So, since you are looking into creating your very own wedding invitation, I have to guess that you are getting married and planning! First, Congratulations, and second, I hope my invitation tutorial helps your planning process go a little smoother!

I will make my own Wedding Invitation so it helps you too 🙂

First, I went to Canva. This is such an interesting site for anything you imagine. You are able to create a Facebook cover for your profile, or a presentation for your next class. The possibilities are endless.

So, once you have arrived at the site, take a look around. You are able to choose from so many options of layouts. Here is what you see:

Screen Shot 2015-12-03 at 11.17.57 PMScreen Shot 2015-12-03 at 11.26.03 PM

I scrolled down to “Events”. This is where you will find the Wedding Invitations icon! Click this card.

Now, a blank card will appear with a list of options on the side. This is your design deck basically, you will create your card here!

Screen Shot 2015-12-03 at 11.32.13 PM

The first button in your list of options (right-hand side) says “Search“. This button can do a multitude of things. I am hoping for a beachy feel for my wedding invitation that I will make today. So, I typed in the keyword, “beachy” into the Search box. As you can see, there are pictures and icons that match this search, and I can add them into my invitation. But, since I don’t exactly want a picture of a beach, I won’t do that today.

Screen Shot 2015-12-03 at 11.02.39 PM

The second option on your right says “Layout“. This is the most helpful  button in my opinion, and has many different pre-made wedding layouts for you to choose and alter! And, of course, you can make your own.

Screen Shot 2015-12-03 at 11.27.01 PM

I immediately see one I like. I clicked it, and it brought the card into the main area for me to work with.

Screen Shot 2015-12-03 at 11.45.33 PM

Of course, I have to change the colors, names and the locations, but I really do like the simplicity of the card. I will keep the font style. Hopefully you will find a style you like!

Screen Shot 2015-12-03 at 11.47.40 PM

I first clicked anywhere in the card where there isn’t text. This brought up a tool bar with options to change the color. I clicked the circle with the color inside, which represents the color of the card. I immediately go with a pretty shade of blue.

Also, if you want to change the font or the background color, click the side option “Text” and “Background“.  There are many other options you can choose from here!

Screen Shot 2015-12-03 at 11.02.19 PM Screen Shot 2015-12-03 at 11.02.27 PM

I forgot to also mention another awesome tool that Canva provides. You are able to upload photos from your computer or Facebook onto your invitation. How cool! To personalize it, pick a cute couple photo to add to your invitation. Click the “Upload your own images” button and there you go!

Screen Shot 2015-12-03 at 11.33.34 PM

Next, I am going to change the text to my personal text. Simply, just tap into the text box and write your name, location, date, and anything else for your invitation.

Screen Shot 2015-12-03 at 11.32.54 PM

As you can see, once you alter text, you are able to change the size and color here too. I will leave it as is.

Screen Shot 2015-12-03 at 11.45.19 PM

From here, I am basically done! Easy, right?

Wait…How will you save this invitation for you big day??

No problem. Canva has a Share and Download button for you! From here, you can put it on Facebook or simply save it for printing!

Please Hire Me?

Character Resume: Using either Microsoft Word, creating your own webpage, or using a website like LinkedIn, create a “fake” resume for a fictional person or character of your choice. Add detailed descriptions and make the resume relevant to the character. Resume must include a profile, work history, education, and skills. Locations, job positions, and companies can be made up! Use your creativity! (3.5 stars).

This is a tutorial on how to create a resume using Microsoft Word.

This assignment required me to make a resume for a fictional character,  so I will be showing you all the resume of Katniss Everdeen, from The Hunger Games!

First, I used the application, Microsoft Word, which I already have on my computer. It is a little “W” on my Mac dock.

First, a template-choosing screen comes up called the “Word Document Gallery”. This has a list of templates you can use within the Word document. On the left hand side, you can see there are many things to choose from. There are Calendars, Letters, Fliers, and much more!

I chose the button Resume, in order to create a Resume through Word today.

Screen Shot 2015-12-02 at 3.01.18 PM

Beneath the Resume Category, there are a couple styles to choose from. I stuck with the first option called “Blocks Resume” which is a very simple layout, but it has a little blocks detail that gives it some life, in my opinion.

Of course, you can choose whichever layout you prefer!

To customize it further, you are able to choose a color scheme and fonts. Since I was creating a resume for Katniss Everdeen, I decided to go with an earthy tone color scheme called Inspiration. I stuck with the original fonts of this template.

Screen Shot 2015-12-02 at 3.23.06 PM

Afterwards, I clicked “Choose” at the very right corner. Let’s begin with our resume!

Screen Shot 2015-12-02 at 3.28.59 PM

As you can see, the template already put my name at the top. This is because normally, I would creating a resume for myself to be submitting, but since I am making a fictional one, I change it to Katniss Everdeen.

This is normally easy, but we are dealing with a Word header. This is a property of the template that makes it seem very professional. In order to change anything in this section, you must double click it and close the header once you are finished.

Screen Shot 2015-12-02 at 3.56.03 PM

I filled in the basic information, my address, phone number, and e-mail here, as well.

I decide I do not really like the bright green headers of the words “Summary, Experience, Education, and Skills” so I am going to change the colors of these headers. This is really simple!

The top of Word Document, under “Font” there are many “A”‘s to choose from. The “A” we want has a colored box underneath of it. This button lets you choose what color you want your words to be. I highlighted the Headers that I wanted to change. I clicked this button and the Automatic color is Black. Hit this. Now the color has changed!

Screen Shot 2015-12-02 at 3.32.13 PM

Of course, if the color scheme you chose is perfect to you, you can leave it as is.

I also want to make the headers Italicized. I use the I under “Font“, beside the B and the U. Again, I highlighted the text Experience, and pressed the I. Now, it is Italicized. This enhances the headers more, in my opinion. You may choose to bold or even underline the headers instead.

Now, I need to change the filled in text that was already there (not sure what language this is?!) and replace it with my information to make my resume!

I complete my Objective, which is what you want to get from the job you are applying for.

Then, I decided to use bullets in order to easily list Katniss’s Experience, Education, and Skills. Sometimes, bullets make things easier to read and look at.

Screen Shot 2015-12-02 at 3.53.15 PM

I clicked the button under “Paragraph” that has dots and then lines next to it. This symbolizes the bullets. As you can see there are multiple styles, I just stuck with the plain black. Now, I have bullets and I can list Katniss’s information using them.

Be sure to fill in all your awesome skills, past experiences, and previous jobs. Do not be humble. This is your time to shine!

Here is my finished product on Word. Very easy and it looks professional.

Screen Shot 2015-12-02 at 3.01.02 PM

And here is my finished Katniss Everdeen resume all clean and dandy!

Screen Shot 2015-12-02 at 3.02.55 PM

Now, you are done with your resume! Congrats! You probably want to e-mail it to someone, or print it out, OR at least, save it!

Screen Shot 2015-12-02 at 4.01.40 PM

From the button File, this selection pops up. Here, you can choose to Save, Print, and Share. This way, you will have your resume where you want it and can share it to your employer.

I hope this Web tutorial on making a resume using Word helps you create a wonderful resume!

What is a Remix?

The first video was a documentary by Brett Gaylor of a remixer called Girl Talk. This band, like many artists and bands, plays music in crowds for many to hear and enjoy. The only difference is that his music is a compilation of many different artists.

I learned in the video what exactly copyright is! It always was a little fuzzy to me. Copyright is for people who want to keep their ideas, while, the opposite, copyleft is an exchange of ideas. I thought it was interesting that they described a song that does have copyright is the famous “Happy Birthday” song. Everyone sings this song on other’s birthdays, never realizing that someone did write this song a long, long time ago!

Nowadays, you are hearing a lot about music stars and singers who take lyrics and music from previous songs. This usually ends up in a lawsuit or an argument at least, and this is because of copyright of songs. Recently, Taylor Swift was being sued for her song, “Shake It Off”. This was because a song called “Haters Gone Hate” was written before. In the video, the band Led Zepplin has been known for taking songs. But, this was legal because the band didn’t modify it enough to claim it.

The motto that was concluded in the video about remixes was so cool to think about. All remixes and mash-ups compile music and video clips from the past and make something new for the future.

“Culture always builds on past” and “Past controls future”

So, what exactly is a remix???

Star Wars Call Me Maybe– This video was clips from Star Wars movies that uses the dialogue to create a new remix of “Call Me Maybe”. This was a great remix! This is a remix because they used the music from the song, and the Star Wars movie to create something new.

Don’t Tase Me Bro/MC Hammer– A video of someone saying “Don’t Tase Me Bro” being inserted into the song “Don’t Touch This” by MC Hammer. This is a remix because they are taking the original song and replacing certain words with their own.

Bad Blood Cover- This is a cover of Taylor Swift’s song Bad Blood. You can find these “covers” all over YouTube. This is a remix, and they give credit below their videos, stating this is a Taylor Swift song, and who it was written and published by.

These are all creative works in my opinion. People have such creative minds and once they see or hear something, they want to use it and create something new and exciting! Remixes and mash-ups are those things that people see all the time on the news or on the internet that sparks our attention. We know these remixes that people all over the world make are awesome and we that is why these compilations or covers go so viral!

A-Z Photo Collage [Remixed]: DS 106-Ersizing:  Make an alphabetically themed collage. Compile images to represent each letter of the alphabet within a chosen subject area or theme. Create a collage. (4 stars).

ReMiX cArD: “DS106-ersizing” Use this assignment to create an advertisment or a recruiting tool for ds106.

For this remix, I used an old Visual Assignment example to create my own remix!!

I used scottclower.org’s original assignment where he made a picture collage of city skylines using the alphabet A-Z. This was very cool, props to Scott!! (It made me want to travel, real bad!)

Here was the collage:

Now, for the remix part, I was to advertise our class, Digital Storytelling. I decided to use Powerpoint, so I could easily add cool text and manipulate it how I wanted to.

Screen Shot 2015-11-22 at 4.04.54 PM

I added text and changed the color of the text to make it more visible! Here is my remixed assignment of this cool City Skyline, trying to get you to join DS106!!

Screen Shot 2015-11-22 at 3.51.17 PM

I have never used the Remix tool so this was very cool! There were so many options and you could refresh the Remix page to try again if you didn’t like the current remixes. I tried it multiple times to see all the possible combinations.

I think this collage not only will urge you to travel, but it also is a great advertisement! I created the text to advertise DS106, and laid it on top of the original collage. Now that the semester is winding down, I have realized that the world “travel” is the only way to really describe what I have done. People ask me all the time, “What do you do in that class?” I have thought a lot about what to exactly say, and it has taken me some time. But now, I know I have traveled through the technology world, using aspects of storytelling that I discovered only as a young girl. Connection is so widely used in this class and it’s so interesting to me how it links you to different people and places around the world. This remix and the pic collage were both perfect for me to use for this assignment.
